I actually did what I said above and bought a car!
....On the upside, I've bought a Citroen C1, with aircon, that has a 1 litre engine, does 60mpg, has a chain rather than a cambelt, and only costs £20 a year in road tax.
Paul, just watch the oil levels like a hawk, had the same motor in our 2011 Yaris. Used it to commute daahn south each week, missed checking the levels for one weekend, next week it was off the dipstick! Developed a "rattle" soon after and bye bye motor with less than 70k miles... Engine type was 1KR-FE, 1L, 3 cylinder vvti. T

sorry! not the right one. That's a modern Mini. I was talking about an Austin Maxi from long ago.
Doc's on about this sort of vehicle, for those of you too young to know....
Sorry not normally known for my sublety. I was trying to say that the new Mini, especially in that coulour IS the new maxi, without any old school charm! - must be getting old or something
the maxi 1750cc wasnt to bad a car actually but 70s fords were much better..
All the local farmers used to use them so they can't be too bad. Useful for carrying sheep to market but their pee fairly quickly rotted through the floor.

Why did the farmers pee in their motors?
Well, you know, farmers and their sheep! lol
My dad had a Maxi in about 1975/6 - all I remember is that it was a piece of crap that kept breaking down, oh and it had that smell that you only got in 1970s cars.
I just pulled up alongside a new mini that was absolutely massive compared with me! What the hell is all that about?
" The new small is bigger", whatever that means.
Yep, new minis are not really minis at all.
Eezyu, the fun we used to have driving minis, back in the day! (And the amount of bottles you could get in the doors....).

Was the engine using oil? If it is not, there is something to be said for using synthetic oil. Maybe an oil pressure gauge would have been good. Did it start leeking oil elsewhere?

It was probably the crappy Lucas electrics that caused the unreliability. For a while Lucas had an market agreement with Bosche. This became illegal under EC rules. It exemplifies why competition is a good thing.
In hindsight, the whole story of BLMC looks preposterous. In the end even Labour came to realise government involvement was a great big mistake. Sad in a way because parts of BLMC did come up with some innovative vehicles.
I have met many amiable, hardworking German people, but I think German car makers are crazy.
Putting a manufacturing industry in the hands of a government of either political persuasion is the kiss of death.
Labour made the mistake of nationalising the car industry and the Tories finished the job of fucking it up completely, pocketing the profitable bits and selling off the carcase to foreigners.
Now don't laugh! We are going to see a Talbot Elldis voyager, 1992 today. From what I read they are pretty crap but the price is right and it's just passed the Manx test which is notoriously picky.
We'll report later, no doubt with tears in our eyes either from laughter or pain.

I’ve looked at one of those in our local scrapyard. It arrived late afternoon and was partially stripped by the time I crawled over it 2 days after. The bodywork was in really good nick. Too nice a bodywork to scrap. The interior “although dated” was very worn. This vehicle had a lot of inside use and not massive road miles. Folk use these campers very differently. Hope your journey is worth it.
cheers, decided to stick to the tried and trusty LT35, smooth engine, very good on fuel and such a lot of space inside.
