    Same. Quite enjoying it!

  • Hi y'all - A few years older, grumpier with less teeth, 'go-fast' white streaks in what was flowing blonde locks and whilst the heart is willing, the body is starting to feel the wear and tear of 'past glories' - (my search for Adamantium forlorn)

    HOWEVER,

My Grandchildren are now at an age (9 & 7) to engage with a greater degree of understanding in both credo of conscience and faith "Teach(ing) one's (Grand) children well" does see Grand reward - Witch = Nice. The spirit of youth doth indeed refresh - so, "Onward, ever onward"

  • Got used to seeing hardly any posts on here maybe a couple of new ones every day or so. Since UKH came back, every time I look in there's between 20 & 30 unread posts! Great to see it all working again hope we can all keep it up....👍😀

So do I. I am so done with Facebook.

  • Don't do that facebook fuckery myself, not very IT savvy & not interested in telling the whole fuckin world what I had for tea! Only interaction I have with like minded people is a couple of forums so very glad this place is back in business again...😉👍

Facebook seems to be full of negativity, hate and anger these days. I really only kept it to keep in touch with folk spread far and wide....and to have some interaction with another human bean and kid myself I have a social life ^^

    This!

You can only accomplish your object in life by complete disregard of the opinions of other people.

  • I would like to think that Facebook has had its day, but it does have a lot of good things going for it.

The problem I have on FB is that I can't post freely, I'm constantly being irritated by people I don't see eye to eye with, and I find it difficult to sift through content from people with some real crazy ideas - including long term friends and family members who I can't just get rid of.

Even though my name is Paul, and a few people have me as FB friends, there's still something freeing in a more anonymous world where I can choose the content I read, sections I follow and don't have to think about the sensitivities of certain people (such as my family members) seeing my posts.

However, FB have big money to throw at making their system work properly, and I can't compete with the way they've swallowed everything up. I can compete on the level of integrity though, because I don't use data to monitor people's shopping habits and I don't manipulate people's opinions by deciding which people get bumped to the top.

Plus, I will never ever force people to use their legal names.

Wouldn't it be great if we could return to a world where smaller, independent, specialist forums, could flourish again?

  • Yeah until recently my FB really only had Ukh'ers on there with a smattering of other folk so it wasn't too bad. Now I've got other boaters on there who annoy the hell out of me but it would be embaressing to delete them when I pass them on the towpath. I probably should just block them actually. I left all the boating FB groups (even the one i created) as youve never come across a more miserable, moany and arguementative bunch of people in your whole life!

I've always seen Ukh as a safe(ish) space so it's good to be back

  • Morning all,

It was so good to find this thread and read so many of the old names from way back. Like Paul, I felt as though I’d travelled back in time.

Since I saw you all at Dovedale last, I’ve got through a fairly horrid divorce where I got my little cottage back but lost my meagre savings so my life has changed right round. I’m no longer retired but now three jobs one of which is a business I’m just about to launch selling chai concentrate, raw chocolate and vegan food from my kitchen.

I’m embracing cottage life and am just eternally grateful that I’m now completely independent and my life is peaceful and drama free.

I’ve just sold my van too. To my son and his partner. Time for a change!

Interestingly, I’ve just joined Facebook after a gap of ten years. I have no friends (from choice) have everything locked down and I use it like a magazine so I only see stuff that lifts me up not down.

Here’s to connecting with you all again.

    I think they will.

There is also a growing community of people who are returning to and starting BBS systems for the same privacy reasons.

  • I had a lot of mental restrictions around what was 'right' and 'good' because they didn't align with the Gnome's, who finally buggered off and took his right and good with him - he's all holy now, meditating full time in Totnes. I started my own religion last November, Deer Gaudism. It's fairly straightforward, no dogma, just a lot of chanting along the lines of "I'm-ok-you're-ok-Boris-not-so-much" and "One-two-three-what-are-we-fighting-for" and my favourite, "Shame-shame, the-brazen-little-raisin" which is a very traditional chant from the 40s when four monks in spats refined the tune. Deer Gaud (in case you were wondering, I know I did!) is a clear plastic stag's head with glitter water inside that spins around while LEDs shine. A friend asked, Is he omnipotent? and I had to reply he was in fact plastic. A Gaud for our times. Also not a proselytising religion - current congregation of 1.

Kidding aside, Deer Gaud was someone to talk to after the Gnome's callous, unexplained discard, when I had a lot to say.

I'm trying to support myself as a technical writer, but it's gone seriously skee-whiff (coff brexit coff) so change is coming. I'm glad the forum's back up - I want to chat with people who aren't an echo chamber of Guardian-level spirituality and have tried-and-tested philosophies. I need your brand of truth-telling because you all are living it, not reading it in the Sunday paper of your choice. <3

  • Wooo Hoooo ... so glad I clicked the old link in my bookmarks before deleting it.

It's been so long I can't remember where we were when I last posted (probably not moved our 5ver more than a couple of hundred meters) but the house is now rented out and we're wondering whether to go stealth in a Luton or upgrade a motorhome (probably the latter)

  • I'm still living on my boat in the Fens (which seems mostly to be working as it should at the moment), when I'm not with French Whale Fan in Haute-Savoie (from where I am writing this message). We lost the fight against the introduction of the Middle Level Act, but our plucky band of dissidents managed to get about twenty amendments and undertakings written in during the Committee Stage - apparently unprecedented in a private bill. Spending eight days last year in Parliamentary Committees (including speaking a few times) wasn't exactly fun, but it was an interesting insight into how broken our democracy really is. Basically you can do what you like if you have enough money as long as you let the plebs think they are getting a fair say.

Yes we did a bit of the "Committee Stage" stuff 'n all :)
Haute-Savoir? Can we come too.. In fact where does one buy a dodgy French passport from...??!!

Oh yes: so glad to be back and thanks for getting this up and running again :) x
