This thing has been getting a fair old bit of use the last couple of weeks, and when I clean it out the ash pan just gets tipped outside.
So I thought... what can the ash be used for? I Did a bit of research... here's what I found:
-Garden fertiliser (Ash is alkaline, and raises soil pH)
-Disguising paint stains on the ground outside
-Metal polish (ash mixed with a little water)
-Making (KOH) lye for soap – soak in water, mix with fat and boil to produce soap, Add salt to harden when cooling.
-Cleaning glass fireplace doors (as per metal polish)
-Slug and snail repellent
Feel free to add any more suggestions*. The most interesting one to me so far is to use it as a garden fertiliser. I have an acer tree on the front, and as far as I remember they like alkaline soil. Maybe I should start dumping the ash on the front garden, much to the disgrace of the neighbours?
