Upon hearing that Miley Cyrus had cited her as an influence, Sinead O’Connor was compelled to reach out to the younger pop star in an open letter.

    Dear Miley,

I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares… So this is what I need to say… And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.

I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

  • I can't stand Sinead O'connor - she comes across like a man hating hasbeen with a chip on her shoulder!

You only have to look at the careers of Madonna and Lady Gaga to see that she's not exactly correct with what she says - and of course the multitude of "boy bands" who are no more than wank fodder for teenage girls!

I mean yeah the music business exploits people, no doubt about that, but gender has very little to do with this and to see it as some kind of misogynistic monster is more a reflection of her own issues.

As for Miley Cyrus, well I don't have many nice things to say about her either, so I don't even know why I'm bothering. :D

  • lol.

I agree with you that this is not just a one sided female artists only sexual exploitation. It covers both sexes. It's nice to see someone saying something though.

  • what's more concerning is that miley cyrus is someone a LOT of young teenage girls love and look up to. so she/whoever is in 'charge' of her is being highly irresponsible. arugably the whole music industry is just a soft porn industry. but that doesn't make it any more redeemable.

we reenact Noah's ancient drama, but in reverse, like a film running backwards, the animals exiting

I like Sinead O`connor! She`s a bit out there but i think her heart`s definitely in the right place.

Don`t know much about that Miley Cyrus but i tend to feel a bit sorry for child stars as they always seem to be heading for a bad fall :S

It seems you have to look towards alternative culture to find musicians that don`t use their sexuality to sell records which is a shame, because the majority of young girls listen to mainstream crap. Boys seem to get objectified too though....in those teen magazines there`s loads of them lying about half naked!

  • I can't give a link because
    a can't remember where i read it
    b don't know how to
but this story has developped in that Cyrus kid behaving like a total wank. She tweeted stuff about sinead o'connor from a while ago when she was in need of help from a mental health profesional like it was current . There is more. I can't recall the details but legal action is being talked about.

    my views too,well said emma:thumbup:

  • Just read the letter...good on Sinead for telling Miley what she needed to hear. Its too easy for these fat cat music biz whizz's to exploit the driven but impressionable young. I don't think Sinead comes across as 'man hating' she just points out a few inconvenient truths about gender and objective. Unfortunately its a sad fact that women being redused to just that of a sex object is far more damaging socially and historically than any kind of objectification of men. I hope Miley takes her words on board...
