  • Possibly removing the Sun from sale would be progress ;)

Really don't see a place for something so outdated as putting some woman with her thingys out in a newspaper... on a side note I wonder if they'd have to put "modesty covers" on the Sun like they're going to do with such fine publications like Nuts?!

  • Its strange how many young girls, older females are going in for boob jobs these days. I would think only a tiny % of these people will have had access to the sun or similar tabloids. This boob body image thing, may have been driven by man, but the grow a big pair or buy em in movement, is really now led by females. If you think its not for your eyes, don't buy it. If any of these page three girls have had boob jobs & been paid to have their picture on page three, then its their choice and they are happy showing off how they look. You may not like it, but it has made celebrities of some of these girls and instead of them getting there tits out for the camera, before returning to the coop to do another shift behind a till, they have found a life in modeling, be that in fashion or nudity. Muninn, who are you trying to impress? I bet you have wanking books under your bed or DVD's stashed in your house.

  • Indeed, it don't buy it. I'd rather buy a newspaper that has actual news in it ;)

Not trying impress anyone.. and no, I don't have "wank books" or DVDs in my house. Obviously I must be weird or something. Or I'm not a proper man because I'm not obsessed by sex every minute of the day. Jeez...

lol I'm up that way shortly. Got to visit some mates on Ladybrook. Wonder if the man behind the keyboard is the same man in the flesh :D no good running round the house now, throwing them in the bin. :D Turn your web cam off :reddevil:

  • Ha ha... send a search party round if you wish! The only things under my bed are old clothes, spiders and scary monsters :D

Don't get me wrong, I have my "urges", just choose not to indulge in them often... you'll go blind you know ;)

  • Ok i can guess why women would get a bit humpty about seeing bare boobs in the sun, its not something my dad read at the kitchen table i can tell you, (he was more of a local wrag sort of person realy and mum would of gone nuts about such things on display for us kids to see.

I can remember as a kid we had to make papier mashae stuff and my eyes about poped out when i saw a woman with a pair of knockers out (in black and white)

The sun was a stawart of the building site page three used to make tradesmen smile in a now to be fair quite innocent way.

Why do i say this well things have ramped up a notch for the younger genration and beyond,, 24 hr online porn, pictures of lasses that lads you work with with more than there boobs out. so everyone gets humpty about nuts and the like and yes i do think its a good idea to wrap the magazines in a bag, but to be fair those things are far better than whats abotu now.

I had access to The Sun when I was a child. My grandparents got it in the post daily (they still do). Page 3 would embarrass me. I grew up wanting a boob job - not entirely to do with The Sun, but maybe partly? I don't think it was for my eyes (especially not at that age!) but, I didn't buy it.

I agree with you Muninn... The Sun should just be scrapped altogether. Pile o' shite ;)

I do agree there it certainly is a pile of crap, the mirror s worse.

  • Having said that though do you think it would be fair to scrap a paper which appeals to lets face it a working class person, there opinion however differant to most on here is still what makes this country a democracy. I would have felt embarrsed if me dad had read the sun at the table with a woman with her boobs out though yet i guess to most families this was the norm.

We never had sun or any other news paper in our home. My daughter had a boob job when she was 24. Yeh I agree the sun is a load a Bollox and a waste of a tree, but taking one picture out of it ain't going to save the world or protect kids from boob jobs.

  • but taking one picture out of it ain't going to save the world or protect kids from boob jobs.

Who said it would?! It's a step in the right direction though. Why would you not do something just because it won't solve the entire problem? If you wanna look at tits, get a lads' mag. There's a time and a place for tits!

  • When I was growing up, it was a bit of an ambition for some of the girls I knew to get on page 3 ... don't ask me why, I guess they thought it was glamorous!

Personally I find it all a bit outdated and kinda objectifying (and to me there is a difference between a sexual object and a sexual being). It also makes the men who look at it seem sad and brings a crap paper even further down to the gutter.

Do they still have the "page 7 fella"? 'cos I think that's just as sad too.

Looking at tits in the comfort of your own home, from a news paper that a person has subscribed to for the best part of his working life, can't be compared to spending his pension on a porn mag. Is it a step in the right direction? is it further censorship? Tastes change over time. The majority of sun readers have not voted with their feet. It is outside pressure groups that has brought this issue to the forefront. Not the readers wives or the folks that buy the newspaper. I won't do something if I don't believe in the cause. In this instance, I think it is harmless enough in that it has been a part of our British culture to have a page 3 within that tabloid. Mary whitehouse also had influence on the media during the 70's and 80's music, art, news were all subject to her ridicule & a lot of what we see as acceptable today, was denied to the public because she pressured government and business via public pressure as a result of scaremongering. In this case, if people want to buy a news paper knowing there is a picture of a topless female on page three and the topless model is happy with the payment she receives. Who are you to say that both the reader and the model are wrong for their actions?

  • Of course, the paper has a very high readership (for some reason), so obviously a lot of people don't have issue with it. I wouldn't buy it for the reason that it is pure gutter press that is fed to brainwash the masses. But I wouldn't ban it, as I do believe in free speech and freedom of expression. Each to their own and all that...

Agreed - I don't have an issue at all with the female form, just don't get the whole sexualisation and objecting that this kinda thing is, whether the girl is up for it or not. I don't have a problem with admiring the female form, in the slightest - but I also see that there is more to a woman that just (fake) breasts.

There's a time and a place for tits!

In the bird hide, with binoculars? :P

  • I now realise that the "page 7 fella" was withdrawn in the 1980s (been a while since I read it) so I can't see how a page dedicated to a semi-naked female constitutes "news" or contributes anything useful to the world or does anything to help equality.

Even when I was a kid, I remember embarrassedly skipping over page 3 in case anyone saw me :D

In some ways I find porn more acceptable - I can't quite work out why, but it actually seems less objectifying.

  • i heard a woman shouting at a bloke she was with on the train once for having the sun open on pg 3. she was really embarassed and made him turn the page :P

it's not destroying 'freedom of speech' to ban it, as these images are available in many other places; but a national newspaper isn't really the place for soft porn, is it? the first turn of a page in the paper and you see objectification of a young woman. she's not a person, she is a commodity, an image to be sold. it's true, much in newspapers fits into this category, and the way they buy and sell people full stop isn't really ok (like harassment of people by journalists or e.g. those boob pictures of kate middleton). I think there is lots to be cross about, both in the media, and in the pornography market. it's not a single issue, but this is one that stands out because we can all see it easily and know about it. that doesn't make it the worst issue; problems of objectification, and body image, come from a HUGE number of sources (and yes women and men are the instigators of this - just as both genders are the victims. i recommend reading the 'beauty myth' by naomi campbell for more info on this it is old but it all still sstands. feminism isn't about helping women, it is about helping men and women. we are all damaged when we view any group of people as less than human). though at the same time we shouldn't DENY sexuality. men will get turned on by attractive sexual looking women (and vice versa but i think not to the same degree?) and this is natural and not dirty or wrong! but it's the extent that we view and/or abuse these images, and it's also a matter of how damaging the market is for those within it and for those who feel they need to live up to those expectations. there is a middle ground. we'll probably never agree on it. but that's ok, as long as we can all keep talking.
if some people want to make a change, and fight to have this page altered, then, even though there's worse stuff out there, i don't see how it does any harm. there's always going to be worse stuff, we don't live in dafur.

we reenact Noah's ancient drama, but in reverse, like a film running backwards, the animals exiting

  • No-one has mentioned The Sport yet? Page 3 on every page! Is it still going? I know it's aimed at a very small group of people, but really was there any reason for it to exist!

When I was working in forestry/landscaping, I used to work with a couple of guys that bought The Sport every day. Every story seems to revolve around how many tit pictures they could cram in. The stories were as false as the tits. It was good for lighting the bonfire with though.
The main source of fun though seemed to be the daily bet as to how many nipples there would be in the paper that day.:rolleyes:There would be arguments as to whether on the smaller pics you could see a nipple or whether it was a smudge in the ink:S

I was often called upon to issue an unbiased judgement so these 2 guys could see who had won the bet. From memory I think the nipple counts used to range from about 50 to over 90 each issue. You couldn't call it a NEWSpaper - there was no news!

  • The boys I used to work with in the factory used to read The Sun,Sport, Nuts etc. It's junk, but anyone with half a brain takes it with a pinch of salt. To be honest I think a lot of Womens mags are potentially far more damaging to young Women/Teens - have you read some of the articles in More? Cosmo? I'd say a lot of issues with weight/body shape/looks are exasperated by these types of mags,no teenage girl is going to be influenced by old mans & silly boys wank fodder are they really.
