  • Hi all,

I take Ash to our local Surestart for the playgroup every week. They are great but I would really like to be able to meet up with parents who are raising children like I am, e.g. baby carrying, baby led weaning, using natural nappies, co-sleeping etc. Most of the mothers who attend the group are not breastfeeding also so although there is support there is not a breastfeeding community as such.

I brought this up with one of the group leaders and said that I was actually starting to feel quite uncomfortable in the group as I am looked on as quite different and not *part of the gang*. (Partly this is my own shyness, which is getting better.) I said that I would love to meet up with parents who thought as I did.

She has spoken to her bosses and they have offered me the regular use of a room for a sling meet (for want of a better word!) They wouldn't be able to openly support the group as they can't be seen to be promoting one form of parenting over another, but we can use the facilities if I organise it.

I have said that I will go and do some research into whether anyone would come along... So I thought that I would ask here whether anyone knows people in Southampton and nearby who would be interested? I know that some of you live nearby and may have family and friends who may want to come along with their children (any age.)

We would meet perhaps once a week, socialise and talk about relevant things. We could share knowledge on our way of parenting and the problems we have come across. We could have a nice cup of tea! And we could make friends and have a support network of like minded people.

I am also going to make up posters and ring up relevant places, post on other websites etc (if anyone has suggestions for where then let me know.)

    Thanks guys!

  • Ooooh, we'll come :D and I have a friend with a toddler who would come, too.

You should contact Jani at the Art House, cos they would definitely support this - she's been talking to me for ages about how Southampton needs something like this. You could advertise in there, and they have rooms to use as well in case we'd need it. Tell her you're the tea tricycle lady, cos she knows who you be :)

  • Oooh, sounds good. Could you get in touch with your friend and see if they definitely would like to come? I want to get some concrete names and numbers so I have a realistic idea of the size of a potential group. Will definitely call the art house too, that was on my list.

  • aw that sounds so lovely :) it's a shame i cant come :(
i dont really get on with any of the girls at my baby group..they're all a bit...'chavvy'. now before anyone flies off the handle, i dont mean that as an insult...they're perfectly nice peple, but they are 'chavs' and we just dont have the same beleifs i guess..
    oh well :(

If you ever feel like a visit, feel free to drop in. The time and day is not decided upon yet so we may pick an afternoon time which would be easier to get to. I know, IOW ferries are rubbish and expensive! But you might be able to make it occasionally.

Can you start an island group? Could you sweet talk local children's services into giving you a free space?

  • Hey Gillyflower,

I reckon we could probably put up a poster or flyers for your group if you like, at the Oxfam bookstore where I volunteer - it's the one on East Street. Good luck with it :)

  • One of the friends I asked says she emailed you (Hannah Goode) as she got your info direct from the art house - I saw you mentioned in the hubub e-newsletter which is awesome! Have we got many takers? I am still waiting to hear back from the other person I asked.

  • Yep, I got the email from Hannah so that is great, and another person called Lucy. I guess we have about 4 or 5 people for the group so far, which is a start. The bosses at the Surestart are looking into availability now (they were a little surprised when I came back so quickly with people!) so as soon as they manage that we can organise our first get together.

  • Haha, I went to the Southampton Go Green Fair today, thinking I could spread the word... but before I had the chance, different people started coming up to me - seeing me with Izzy in the sling - and asking if I'd heard about the new group starting :p you have been busy! And when I popped into the health shop on the way back to the station, the lady in there showed me your poster, telling me about 'the natural baby thing'!

I chatted for ages to a lady from the real nappy network who said she's sending your details on to anyone she thinks might be interested, and she said to ask you if you'd be interested in going along to any of their meetings also. I said I might go along sometimes... she was very enthusiastic!

  • How excellent! It seems that I have tapped in to the right group of people! Jani has been brilliant actually. Its great to find so many potential group members in a city where I have seen so little evidence of attachment parenting.

  • Hi ladies,

I haven't posted on here before, but found this thread by googling 'Southampton Sling Meet'. My name is Debbie and I am mum to a 3 year old little girl and a 15 month old little boy. I am a trainee BF counsellor and I run a local BF support group, in addition to being a cloth nappy agent and a babywearer.

Just to let you all know that I have been in the process of setting up a sling meet and we have our first meet next Thur (4th Dec) at St Paul's Church, Bursledon. It would be lovely to see some of you there. We are hoping that it will spread the babywearing word around the city a bit more!

We now have 8 slings in the library, with more on their way, and it seems that once it gathers pace, it could be quite an undertaking, so any help would be gratefully received!

For more info, please see our website (if you google as I did, you will find it).

I'm not sure if there is an actual meet running in the IOW at the moment, but there is a page on the Sling Meet site, so you could ask there.

HTH and hope to meet some of you next week!

    Debbie.xx.

  • Hi Debbie!
Its good to know that more sling meets are around. I have around 10 members for the group at the moment and we are waiting to hear about availability of rooms. Bursledon is the other side of the city to me so it seems that we could cover a side each. I probably won't be able to make it on a Thursday as I am quite busy on those days, but if anyone else goes along, let me know how it goes!

  • I used to live in Bursledon and it makes me happy to know there's a sling meet there :) it's too far for me to travel, but I wish you all the best of luck with it, Debbie. Maybe occasionally the two meets could link up for socials?

  • hiya do you know theres a slingmeet website hun advertise it there. its www.slingmeet.co.uk

Thanks for that, Dawn Rose - I've found someone who lives near me :)

Erm, sorry for the off-topicness - hope the Southampton group/s go/es well, too far for me to come, though.

  • aww im glad i posted it now that peeps can make use of it. As per the usual wigan has absolutely nowt not even a cloth nappy scheme. tut tut at wigan it needs a shake up.

Looks excellent! Surestart are now delaying on offering a room and I am thinking of looking elsewhere for a venue if they pull out. It would still be a challenge for me to get over to Burseldon but I hope that it continues to do well for you. I am hoping for our group to be more of a social and play meet as well so we will have different angles. I will try and make it across in the near future!

  • Almost everyone at the Surestart Centre I started off in, was bottlefeeding. I ended up doing it too, though that was not the plan. They had a sling library but people just weren't interested and I was thought weird by everyone except the staff for using cloth nappies. The only mums who were into what I was, went to the breastfeeding group which after only 8 days of being a mum, I couldn't go to anymore (and they were so up themselves, I couldn't win). It would have been ace to have had a group that wasn't solely for breastfeeding mums but for people who had other likeminded ideas like cloth nappies and sling wearing. I co-slept with Kaya a lot, though she won't do it now and hadn't since she was older than four months (do I smell?).

Good luck with your group, I hope that by the time I'm lucky enough to find a new partner and have another baby, that there will be somewhere locally where I can meet likeminded people (and get the right help to breastfeed).

It hasn't even started yet! I had to send out apology notices to all the potential members over Christmas as Surestart have really started to drag their feet over it and try to persuade me to use a different venue. I'm quite disappointed in them actually, after they were so keen to encourage me to start the group there. I do have the option of asking to use a room at the Art House in Southampton, but parking is difficult and they aren't babyproofed as yet. I think that a donation to do that would be the right thing to do as well as it is a voluntary operation, which would mean paying something each week. The other option is a local church which one of the potential members attends. Again they would ask for a donation and not all of the members may be happy to give money to an organisation/religion they did not agree with. Some would feel very uncomfortable being in a church building. Neither of those options have toys available so we would all have to bring our own.

Therefore I am holding out for Surestart but I haven't seen my contact there for 2 weeks. I don't know whether she is on holiday or is avoiding me! The next time I go though I will be asking about it again and trying to get a firm answer.

  • Hi again,

Just a quick message to let you know that we are moving to a new venue as of the April meet. The new venue is The Windmill Childrens' Centre, Long Lane Burseldon. It is within walking distance of both Bursledon train station and the bus routes which go through Lowford, as well as having plenty of car parking nearby. There are more details on our website, www.southamptonslingmeet.com

We also have some new arrivals in our sling library. In addition to our current stash, we will have a Babyhawk XT mei tai, a Napsack mei tai, an UhBoohBahBaby pod, a Didymos woven wrap and a Hugabub stretchy wrap. For more details on what we have in the library, please see our website.

Hope to see some of you at one of our meets!

    Debbie x
